MK5 SUPRA

101 – THE BASICS

Like its predecessor, the cult hero MKIV JZA80 Supra, the new 2020+ Totota GR MKV A90/1 Supra, was built by Toyota with the aftermarket modification scene in mind.  With a RWD drivetrain and advanced tech, the new Supra is the perfect platform for anyone looking to push the envelop as a competition vehicle, or just make the ultimate daily.

Built in collaboration with BMW, the release of this vehicle had as much anticipation and hype as all the other big names vehicles in the JDM scene – a rivalry continued and dynsasty reborn, with a new updated competitor for GTR and all the iconic JDM vehicles of years gone by.

Created on a new, jointly developed sports car platform by Toyota & BMW, with a short wheelbase, wide track, and low centre of gravity, the MK5 Supra took the world by storm upon release.  Tuned and developed with extensive testing at the Nürburgring. The Supra in Australia is powered by a BMW-sourced engine option: the turbocharged B58 3.0-litre inline-six, delivering a whopping 285kw and 500nM of torque. Power is sent to the rear wheels through a ZF 8HP 8-speed automatic transmission that was fully re-calibrated by Toyota for the Supra. A specialized ZF S6-53 6-speed manual transmission option was made available in 2022 for the 2023 model year, and like the automatic, was built from a combination of ZF parts and custom Toyota parts, but receives a rev-matching function and a shorter final drive ratio compared to its automatic bretheren.

Whilst a vastly different platform to modify and upgrade from the previous MK4 Supra of the same name, the MKV supra delivers amazing performance and drivability when upgraded by the right people with the right know how. Whilst not the easiest platform to access from a tuning perspective (special ecu unlocks etc required), experience with european design and tuning concepts (from the B58 engine platform) is required for calibration and macro vehicle enhancement, but luckily the team at ECC is well versed in what is required to achieve incredible and reliable results from the new Supra.

For owners of this incredible cult vehicle, you can rest assured the team at ECC has the runs on the board and proper experiene to guide you towards the right path when it comes to upgrading and enhancing this platform.

EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW WHEN MODIFYING THIS PLATFORM

Whilst it seems to be a bit of an industry standard, to look at modification paths for a car based on bundles of modification, commonly referred to as “stages”. We have found at ECC that this isn’t always the case, with all builds being different in their own right, and comparing “stages” is generally not a great like for like comparison when there is no regulation between what a workshop will include in said stages.

For this reason, why have put together this basic modification and upgrade guide, which should walk you through the basics of what you need to know when modifying this platform. Specifically, the best ways to go about things and more importsntly, what NOT to do, toensure you dont make expensive or costly mistakes when commencing this journey.

Throw in your details and download a copy – this should give you most of the information you need to know when it comes to this platform, and of course, if you have any questions, don’t hesitate to reach out.
