STI

101 – THE BASICS

Whilst there have been many different STI. “Variants” of the WRX over the year, we will start this guide by focusing on the VA Subaru STI which was introduced in 2014.

With an updated shape, up-rated brakes, and the famous EJ257 4 cylinder engine, the new STI continued on Subaru’s legacy of a high performance variant of their ever famous “boxer” engine. Whilst the Subaru platform is divisive, and not everyones cup of tea, there is no denying it’s popularity among those who have travelled down the boxer engine path. The release of the STI paved the way for a very clear differentiations from the alternative WRX – being relesaed as a different model with a completly different engine, and elevated the STI to a new cult status.

With the introduction of user adjustable drive modes from factory, the new “Intelligent”, “Sport” and “Sport Sharp ” modes opened up a world of possibilities to the aftermarket with multiple boost levels and different types of tune able to run at the press of a button. Combined with the backing and support of the massive US modification scene, the software developers from companies suchas COBB and ECUTEK kept pushing the envelope with custom capabilities, and the auro of the new STI continued to grow.

At ECC, we have built hundred of the new STI packages, from super mild to extremely wild. Being fortunate enough to have been blessed witha numer of Subaru “Master Techs” on our team over the year, you can rest assured that a modified STI is in safe hands with the team at ECC.

EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW WHEN MODIFYING THIS PLATFORM

  • Whilst it seems to be a bit of an industry standard, to look at modification paths for a car based on bundles of modification, commonly referred to as “stages”. We have found at ECC that this isn’t always the case, with all builds being different in their own right, and comparing “stages” is generally not a great like for like comparison when there is no regulation between what a workshop will include in said stages.

For this reason, why have put together this basic modification and upgrade guide, which should walk you through the basics of what you need to know when modifying this platform. Specifically, the best ways to go about things and more importsntly, what NOT to do, toensure you dont make expensive or costly mistakes when commencing this journey.

Throw in your details and download a copy – this should give you most of the information you need to know when it comes to this platform, and of course, if you have any questions, don’t hesitate to reach out.
