The release of the STI paved the way for a very clear differentiations from the alternative WRX – being relesaed as a different model with a completly different engine, and elevated the STI to a new cult status.
With the introduction of user adjustable drive modes from factory, the new “Intelligent”, “Sport” and “Sport Sharp ” modes opened up a world of possibilities to the aftermarket with multiple boost levels and different types of tune able to run at the press of a button. Combined with the backing and support of the massive US modification scene, the software developers from companies suchas COBB and ECUTEK kept pushing the envelope with custom capabilities, and the auro of the new STI continued to grow.
