Commodore

101 – THE BASICS

Since its inception in 1978, the Australian Commodore has held its rightful place as an automotive legend Down Under. This iconic car has garnered a reputation as one of the most popular V8s globally for those who seek modification and performance enhancements, and is the reason many performance enthusiasts came into the scene.

Split into two defining generations, the Gen 3 models, starting with the VT in 1997 and concluding with the VZ in 2005, and the Gen 4 VE-VF models, introduced in 2005/2006 with the VZ, and with the final iteration, the VF, bidding farewell in 2017, this platform basically redfined performance vehicles in Australia.

The main reason behind their cult like succes – the iconic LS engine. This pushrod, single overhead cam V8 is the canvas for automotive enthusiasts , responding exquisitely to modifications. With incredible bang for buck camshaft upgrades, and an incredible appetite for boost, the LS engine is truly something special.

Paired perfectly with an assortment of 4 and 6 speed automatic transmissions, as well as Tremec manua boxes, and even classic powerhouse conversions, this platform has made the Aussie performance scene what it is today.

Even though the almight Commodore is no longer a new production vehicle here, you can rest assured the team at ECC has all your upgrade needs covered when it comes to this incredible platform.

EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW WHEN MODIFYING THIS PLATFORM

Whilst it seems to be a bit of an industry standard, to look at modification paths for a car based on bundles of modification, commonly referred to as “stages”. We have found at ECC that this isn’t always the case, with all builds being different in their own right, and comparing “stages” is generally not a great like for like comparison when there is no regulation between what a workshop will include in said stages.

For this reason, why have put together this basic modification and upgrade guide, which should walk you through the basics of what you need to know when modifying this platform. Specifically, the best ways to go about things and more importsntly, what NOT to do, toensure you dont make expensive or costly mistakes when commencing this journey.
