101 – THE BASICS

Whilst technically, the history of the Nissan “Z” car starts all the way back in 60’s with the original Fairlady Z, we will focus our attentions here from the 5th generation models, which started with the 350Z.

The introduction of the 350Z in 2002 breathed life and fresh air into a market that was aching for a good RWD 2 door coupe or sports car. Released with the 3.5L v6 VQ35DE engine, it created a whole sub genre of performance enthusiasts who couldnt get into. turbo model for whatever reason, or as they Z cars aged, wanted a cool, stylish, RWD performance vehicle without the alternative supercar price tags.

As the 370Z and VQ37VHR engines followed, and then to todays present “Nissan Z” sporting the new VR30DDTT twin turbo engine, the popularity of the platform has not waned.

Particularly in Australia, where certain P-plate driver restriction limit the type of vehicle accessible to the young modifier, the 350Z and 370Z series of vehicles has been a god send.

Fortunately, ECC has been at the forefront of this market for well over a decade, with one of our owners Rob even flying to the US in the very early days to get specific and indidual training on modifying this paltform by the world leading software calibration company UPREV at the time. A pre-requisite for becoming an official calibrator and their official Australian dealer, this early relationship and training has solidified ECC as perhaps the Australian leader in all things VQ and Z car performance. Being one of the first in the country to implement multi mapping, forced induction, flex fuel, built engines and transmissions and a variety of other Aussie first mods, this platform has been one of our absolute ECC staples for the last 10-15 years + as one of the only workshops in Australia with intimate knowledge in modifying and tuning this platform.

EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW WHEN MODIFYING THIS PLATFORM

Whilst it seems to be a bit of an industry standard, to look at modification paths for a car based on bundles of modification, commonly referred to as “stages”. We have found at ECC that this isn’t always the case, with all builds being different in their own right, and comparing “stages” is generally not a great like for like comparison when there is no regulation between what a workshop will include in said stages.

For this reason, why have put together this basic modification and upgrade guide, which should walk you through the basics of what you need to know when modifying this platform. Specifically, the best ways to go about things and more importsntly, what NOT to do, toensure you dont make expensive or costly mistakes when commencing this journey.

Throw in your details and download a copy – this should give you most of the information you need to know when it comes to this platform, and of course, if you have any questions, don’t hesitate to reach out.
